PlaceEngine is a WiFi-based location platform. While GPS only works in outdoor environments, PlaceEngine estimates locations both indoors and outdoors. Required time for position sensing is very short (typically less than 1 second), because there is no “cold start time” which is necessary for GPS. We also constructed an access point database that covers major cities in Japan. This database stores more than half a million access points and their estimated locations. Access point locations are estimated by combining various methods, including: war driving, war walking, as well as analyzing end user’s location queries. PlaceEngine also supports API (application programmers interface) to make programming location aware applications easy.
機器の位置認識にはGPSが用いられてきたが、屋内での使用が不可能・計測開始までに時間がかかる、などの問題があった。無線 LANの普及を背景に、WiFiアクセスポイントを利用した電測情報によって 位置認識を行う方式の実用性が増してきている。 WiFi方式位置認識では、不特定の所有者が設置する 膨大な個数のアクセスポイントの位置そのものを効率よく推定し、 さらに、漸次的に発生するアクセスポイントの追加・削除・位置移動などに対処する必要がある。本研究ではインターネット上での情報集約の考 え方として注目される「集合知」の発想をセンシングに適用し、エンドユーザによる検索要求などからデータベース更新のための情報を抽出する機構を提案する。
